An easy way to incorporate NVivo into your curriculum
Life has this way of being either/or, and it never seems possible to 'have it all'.
When I was teaching (for over two decades) there were many resources I wanted to create, but constant demands on my attention meant I just didn't have the time. As my situation changed and I finally had the opportunity to get creative, I didn’t have the students. Typical.
Now, I think I've figured out a way to help qual research professors have their cake and eat it too!
A ready-to-go learning resource
Educators want to provide their students with rich learning materials but they face the nemesis of time. What if I could help them incorporate NVivo into their coursework? What if they had a flexible resource that they could adapt to suit their method or discipline? What if I could do this without adding to their already overflowing plates? These are the kind of questions that keep me awake at night.
Out of this desire, The NVivo Teacher’s Guide was born.
With the help of my colleagues at QSR International (and professors from a variety of Universities and Colleges), we piloted the learning module 'Working with PDFs'. Using their feedback as a guide, the project grew into what will be a collection of nine modules designed to help professors incorporate NVivo into their existing curriculum.
As you'll see in the Background section of the guide:
The NVivo Teacher’s Guide has been designed as a tool to assist educators in providing students with learning experiences incorporating the powerful tools found in NVivo. Respecting the various styles in use in classrooms the package has been designed with flexibility so that each instructor can use the components that best match her or his style.
Nine adaptable modules
There are nine modules that can be used individually or in any combination. The modules include:
- Working with PDFs
- Working with Interviews – Emergent
- Working with Interviews – A Priori
- Working with Images
- Working with Audio Visual Data
- Working with Survey Data
- Working with Social Media
- Classifications and Attributes
- Tools for Mixed-Methods Research
The first three are currently available and the others are on their way.
Everything you need in one place
Each learning module is self-contained and includes these resources:
- Teacher’s Guide and Student's Guide (including an example activity and assessment rubric.)
- Companion project (including embedded instructional videos so that students can watch the video and practice the skills without ever having to leave the project.)
- Sample project (particularly useful when people are asked to step-in and teach at the last minute but almost any current project could be used if desired)
The projects are set up to be used either in a classroom setting or independently. This is what makes the resource so flexible.
Even if you’re not teaching qualitative research, you might find these resources useful—for example, you could explore the 'Working with PDFs' module to see how NVivo can encourage more critical reading.
So don't feel stuck between 'either' and 'or' (like I was) because now you can have both—a rich learning experience for your students and a reasonably tame 'to do' list.
