How do I print my project items (such as documents and nodes) and the relevant coding stripes next to them on one page?

NVivo’s coding stripes – like colored highlighter pens for your project themes – let you see which sections of your project items have been categorized or ‘coded’ at specific topics or ‘nodes’. With NVivo 8 and NVivo 9, coding stripes also allow you to view all of the coding done by particular users in a project, as well as attributes or demographic information (called ‘Classifications’ in NVivo 9) such as gender, age or income, across your coding.

By default, when coding stripes are printed, they will appear on a separate piece of paper after the project item (such as the document or node) that they apply to. However, by adjusting your printer settings, your coding stripes can appear on the same page as the relevant project item. To do this:

Change the number of pages printed per sheet

  1. With the project item open and coding stripes displayed:
    - For NVivo 8, click on File/Print .
    - For NVivo 9, click on File menu > Print and click on Print in the Preview and Print sub menu.
  2. Select the relevant Print Options and click OK .
  3. Select PRINTER Properties/Preferences/Options .
  4. Most printers will have an option for ‘Pages per sheet’. Change this option to 2 , so that you are printing two pages on every sheet.
  5. Also ensure that your document is set to print in Portrait format, and you should be able to print pages 1 and 2 (that is, the project item and its coding stripes) next to each other on the same sheet.

The print results will depend on your printer settings and the number of coding stripes you have displayed. In addition to the above steps, you can print onto a larger paper size such as A3. To do this:

  1. In the PRINTER Properties/Preferences/Options, most printers should have an option for 'Paper Source' or 'Output Size'.
  2. Change this option to A3.
