Prior to moving NVivo 9 to a new computer, ensure that you have your full 25 character NVivo 9 license key handy. If you purchased NVivo 9 as a boxed version, you’ll find this key on the back of the DVD case, or if you received your software via electronic download, you’ll find this key in the email you received from QSR. If you’re using NVivo as part of an enterprise license, your organization’s enterprise license contact should be able to provide you with this key.
Deactivating your license
To transfer NVivo 9 from one computer to another you must deactivate the license on the original computer first. Please make sure you are connected to the Internet. To do this:
- Click the File tab, point to Help then click Deactivate License .
- Once the license is deactivated, use Microsoft Windows Control Panel to uninstall NVivo 9 from your original computer.
Re-installing and activating your software
To re-install NVivo 9 on your new computer, we recommend you first download the most recent version of our software which can be found at: http://www.qsrinternational.com/support_downloads.aspx
During installation you will need to enter your full NVivo 25 character license key.

Once the software is installed on your new computer, you can activate your license.
Moving existing projects
Once you’ve installed the NVivo 9 software on your new computer, you may also wish to move your existing NVivo projects to the new computer. There are two ways for you to do this:
- Launch NVivo 9 and at the Welcome screen click the File tab, point to Manage then select Copy Project ; OR
- Using Windows Explorer, locate your NVivo 9 project file and copy it to the intended location.
NVivo 9.2 is the most recent version of NVivo 9. Projects created in NVivo 9.0 and NVivo 9.1 can be opened and worked with in NVivo 9.2. However, projects created in NVivo 9.2 cannot be opened in NVivo 9.0 or NVivo 9.1.
