What are the new features in NVivo 9?

NVivo 9 includes a wide range of new features, including the ability to:

  • Import and work with data contained in Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, Access database tables, text delimited files and ODBC database tables or views.
  • Work with NVivo 9 in English, German, Spanish, French, Portuguese and Simplified Chinese.  A separate Japanese language version of NVivo 9 is also available.
  • Significantly improved PDF handling in NVivo 9.1 (or later). Once imported into NVivo, your PDFs will look like they did in Adobe Reader. You can also work directly with text, images and tables within PDFs.
  • Import information from literature reviews from reference management tools like EndNote, Zotero or RefWorks. Also export bibliographic references from NVivo 9 into those applications.
  • Save the criteria you used to “find” an item into a “search folder” - so if you need to re run the same find later, you’ll be able to do so easily.
  • Speed up your analysis – particularly when you’re working with large datasets – by automatically coding your data.
  • Automatically control how broad your ‘text search’ and word frequency queries’ are – from an exact word match, to words that are similar in meaning.
  • Explore connections between items and display them visually with ‘connection maps’.
  • Use ‘tree maps’ to show how frequently a word or project item appears relative to other project items for example.
  • Use cluster analysis to visualize the similarities and differences in your sources or nodes.
  • Create your own reports using the Report wizard. With NVivo 9.1 or later, modify these reports by adding or removing fields or changing the order of your data for example. You can apply your own color schemes and styles too.
  • Combine NVivo Server 9 with NVivo 9 to allow team members to work in the same project at the same time.
