Troubleshooting NVivo

How do I resolve ‘No standalone Connection’ error OR why am I getting a prompt for a ‘Connection name’ when I create a project?

Installing NVivo | 18 September 2013

Windows 8

You will need to have full administrative privileges on the computer to perform these steps. Please contact your system administrator if the computer is in a corporate environment.

1. If you have activated NVivo 10 then the software first needs to be deactivated. If you have not activated then move to step 2. To deactivate follow the steps below:

a. Open NVivo 10 then the software first needs to be deactivated. If you have not activated then move to step 2. To deactivate follow the steps below:

b. Ensure you are connected to the Internet, go to File > Help > Deactivate license.

c. After the license has been deactivated, close out NVivo if it’s not already closed.

2. If you have installed NVivo 10 then the software needs to be uninstalled. If you have already uninstalled the software please go to step 3. To uninstall go to Start menu, Control Panel then Uninstall or Change a Program.

Select QSR NVivo 10 from the programs list and click on Uninstall.

Restart your computer to complete the uninstallation process.

3. The error message/prompt you are receiving normally indicates that Microsoft SQL Server (the database component used by NVivo) has failed to install correctly and often it can fail if the user name is the same as computer name. To check if this applies here, follow the steps below:

a. From the Start screen, start typing msinfo32 and click on the msinfo32 search result displayed.

b. When the System Information window is displayed, check the value under System Name and
User name fields.

If your system name is the same as your user name, the username will usually be displayed as system name/SYSTEM NAME/system name. For example, if the system name is “John”, the user name will usually be displayed as “John/JOHN/John”

4. Please follow either step 4a. or 4b. below depending if your system name and user names are same or not:

a. If system name is the same as user name:

From the Start screen, start typing Rename, click on Settings icon below the search bar

i. Click on Rename this computer search result displayed.
ii. The System Properties screen opens up.
iii. Click on Change in the Computer Name tab.
iv. Enter a new name in the Computer name field and press on OK.

Note:

  • You don't need to change your domain, workgroup or any other setting, just change the System Name. If you are unable to change the system name, please contact your IT System Administrator as this setting may require Administrative privileges.
  • You may be prompted to restart the computer after following the above steps.

v. Once your computer has restarted, temporarily disable your Antivirus/Antispyware software.

Note: For Microsoft SQL Server installation to be successful, some antivirus and security software programs like PC-Tools need to be shutdown (by right-clicking on the appropriate icon in taskbar and selecting shutdown) completely, rather than just disabling them.

vi. Re-run NVivo setup by right clicking on the downloaded file and selecting Run as administrator. If
you no longer have the NVivo setup file, it can be downloaded from the links below:

NVivo10:

Note:

  • Only install the 64-bit version if you are using Windows 7/8 64-bit operating system.

b. If system name is not the same as user name:

i. Restart your computer

ii. Temporarily disable your Antivirus/Antispyware software.

Note: For Microsoft SQL Server installation to be successful, some antivirus and security software programs like PC-Tools need to be shutdown (by right-clicking on the appropriate icon in taskbar and selecting shutdown) completely, rather than just disabling them.

Still experiencing problems?

If the above steps still have not resolved the issue, then please submit a support request form with the following information attached:

1. Locate the Log folder at the following location:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\

Note: If you are unable to find the Log folder in the above location, please look for the folder in the following location:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\

Zip up the Log folder (right mouse click on Log, select Send To > Compressed (Zipped) folder) and attach the folder LOG.zip to your email. There are restrictions with the file size that you can email us. If the zipped file is over 8 MB, please let us know and provide the actual size of the zipped files (right-click on the file and select ‘Properties’ to check its size). We can then set up a secure file sharing service provided by http://www.dropbox.com for you to upload your project.

2. We require some information about your computer:

a. Open the Start menu, and in the Run search box type msinfo32 and press the Enter key. The System information page will be displayed.

b. In the System information screen, click on File > Save and save the file to your desktop as info.nfo and attach it to your email.

3. Please include screenshots of any error messages you may be receiving by pressing Alt + Print Screen (PrtScn on some keyboards), copy it into a Word or WordPad document and then attach the document to your email.

4. Also provide us with the name of the antivirus software you are using.
