“NVivo 12.app” can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software. The software needs to be updated. Contact the developer for more information?

When NVivo 12 Mac customers download the latest NVivo 12.6 update, they may get the following error mesage:

“NVivo 12.app” can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software.

The software needs to be updated. Contact the developer for more information.

This is because macOS includes a technology called Gatekeeper, that's designed to ensure that only trusted software runs on your Mac. Gatekeeper in macOS Catalina requires an extra verification step called notarization. You may receive the above message when an application you are trying to install or open is not “notarized”.

Please be assured that NVivo 12 has gone through rigorous internal Quality Assurance processes at QSR and doesn’t contain any malware. If you’ve downloaded NVivo 12 app from QSR Website and are receiving this message, please follow the below steps to install NVivo 12 on your computer:

  • Click on Apple menu in the top left corner of your screen
  • Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy
  • Under the General tab. Click Open Anyway to confirm your intent to open or install NVivo.

Alternatively, you can also right-click (or Control click) on NVivo icon and select Open to open NVivo 12.

Please contact Support team if you have any further queries or concerns.
